What do you think of the title? Notorious?! I like Americans. It always sound dramatic and deadly.
Yesterday, I received an email from a friend in the States. He or she shared some views about the list. The list is referring to the most "notorious" market in which substantially facilitating piracy and counterfeiting on physical marketplaces like selling pirated DVDs, video games cartridges and CDs.
The list also covered the list based on online marketplaces. I would cover that in the next posting.
Of course it is such a disgrace. It really undermines the sweat and tear of innovative and creative people. Should stop, if possible. Or at least gradually reduce it. The 'essence' of demand vs. supply.
Nonetheless, you can read the whole report in Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) blog. Unfortunately, the list is NOT in order of "notorious" level. But you could figure it out yourself. :)

1. Argentina - La Salada, Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a well-known as South America's largest mall and largest black market. Counterfeit and pirated products deal openly over 30,000 stalls. According to the report, the European Commission labeled La Salada as the biggest illegal market in the world.
2. China - Garment Wholesale Center – Guangzhou Railway Station (Guangzhou), Buynow PC Malls, Luohu Commercial Center (Shenzhen, China), Silk Market (Beijing) and Zengcheng International Jeans Market (Zengcheng, Guangdong).
I amaze with the ability of Buynow PC Malls selling pirated movies and games, and pirated versions of operating system software and other types of software. Bear in minds, Buynow PC Mall is a very well-established formal chain of markets across China. 22 computer malls. Operating like normal and legitimate supermarket. Amazing!
3. Colombia - San Andresitos (Bogotá, Cali and other cities). The shopping area smacks in the capital city full with smuggled goods including unauthorized reproduction and distribution of music, movies and video games. Nice!
4. India - Nehru Place and Gaffar Market (New Delhi), Manish Market and Lamington Road (Mumbai), and Chenoy Trade Center and the Hong Kong Bazar (Hyderabad). Nehru Place is like an epicenter of dealing with pirated software, movies and music. People normally go Lamington Road to get pirated DVDs or Hindi and English movies. I don't know the quality. Honest.
5. Indonesia - Harco Glodok, Mangga Dua Mall, Ambassador Mall/ITC and Ratu Plaza (Jakarta). The main one is Harco Glodok. Enforcement is not really effective. You could easily find pirated DVDs, software, games and movies for instance any ITC especially Ambassador Mall.
6. Mexico - Tepito (Mexico City) and San Juan de Dios (Guadalajara). I guess reducing the activity of selling pirated DVDs or video games should be the least target though. Yeah this could be "notorious".
7. Paraguay - Ciudad del Este. This is the hub for Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Period. A good friend of China.
8. Spain - A Pedra Market (Vigo). A popular spot for tourists. The local government says 'Si'.
9. Thailand - Pantip Plaza, Klong Thom, Saphan Lek and Baan Mor, MBK Shopping Center, Talad Nat on Wireless Road (Bangkok), Chatuchak, Sukhumvit Road and Patpong Market (Bangkok); Patong and Karon Beach (Phuket); IT City (Pataya); and the Rong Klua border market (Aranyaprathet)
You have to love Bangkok. Do you know that Talad Nat on Wireless Road is located nearby the U.S. Embassy? Sweet!
10. Ukraine - Petrivka Market (Kyiv) and Seventh Kilometer Market (Odessa). The latter is notoriously famous as one of the largest markets in Europe.
What do you think? I guess Malaysia and Philippines are not "notorious" enough.
